Homemade Washable Finger Paint

I thought of doing this in the winter time. And then I remembered the snow outside and I didn't want to clean up finger paint inside. So I have waited until now.

It was a giant hit with Jack. I had a big canvas that I bought at one of the Aaron Brother's penny sales last year. So I pulled that out and put Jack on the patio. Instead of fingers, he preferred a paint brush. Son One doesn't prefer to get messy. I could have had Van participate, but what is so fun about a 14 month old and finger paint, even if it is washable? I am a pretty cool mom, but not THAT cool.

And yes ladies- it's WASHABLE.

Let me advise you that this is more for fun than it is for quality. The paint isn't the most vibrant thing you have ever used, but it still works for your budding artists. And this is an immediate use type of concoction.

Once again, I can't remember the source of this recipe. I am really bad at documenting that before I copy and paste into my Google Docs.

2 Tbsp sugar
1/3 cup cornstarch
2 cups cold water
1/4 cup liquid dish soap
Food coloring

In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and cornstarch. Whisk to combine. Gradually pour in the cold water and whisk. Set heat to medium and stir occasionally. Once the mixture begins to bubble, turn heat to low and whisk constantly until mixture is thickened and gel-like. Remove from heat and let cool completely, whisking occasionally.

Once cooled, stir in dish soap. Divide mixture into small airtight containers, one for each color you want to have. Add food coloring into each container and mix well. Use immediately or cover and use later.

Whitney, I feel I must apologize (after feeling scolded by your sister) in NOT mentioning how freaking hilarious you are. I just come to expect it in your posts now and as I read, I laugh, but I never say anything about it! But I just want you to know ...

PLEASE NEVER STOP writing those hilarious one-liners! They do not go missed by me!

I feel a lot of pressure now after being flogged in the written form by your sister for not leaving better comments. In my defense, if you're going to post about FOOD (my favorite lover) and include photos that make my taste buds go crazy with anticipation (sidenote: why is it that food and sex can often produce the same physiological response? At least for me, I digress...) then I'm bound to get distracted and glaze over your witty commentary.

So if I forget in the future than know this: I wouldn't read you if I didn't like what you got.

Seacrest out.

finger painting outside in the summer is one of my kiddos favorite things to do! i usually buy washable finger paint, but jeeper creepers i should be making it. seems easy and looks like it's definitely cheaper. (plus the store bought finger paint is not vibrant either. i thought something was wrong with it the first time i bought it.)
i roll out butcher paper on the driveway and let them have at it, in their swim suits. then i spray 'em done with the hose.

ps. in reference to sparks latest: i want to let you know that i catch every bit 'o funny in your posts:)i read mainly because i like you, you know i don't cook much. you are witty whit and i love it.

Craft time with the kids usually ends up with them sitting for an hour with me and then, tired of doing the same thing they have moved on while I continue to fill in pages upon pages of their coloring books or enjoy the feeling of squishy finger paint on multiple pieces of paper.

Can't wait to try this with the kids. You say it's edible? Wouldn't this make you fart bubbles?

What if you substituted the dish soap with chocolate syrup...could we then have some paint that would go right along the lines of your naughty little guac? :)
