Y oh Y?

He has been begging me for weeks and weeks. Whenever we would drive around and he would see it, he would plead with me.

"Mom, please! I promise I won't ask you to carry me. I promise I won't cry and I will hold your water bottle. I promise Mom! Please!"

I avoided it and kept giving him empty promises.

"Yes, Jack. We will do it sometime soon. We will have to talk to Dad and see when he isn't busy and he can have Van for a few hours. I'll talk to Dad tonight."

I said that about 10 times.

But then I really talked to Ethan and scheduled a time for me and Jack to hike the Y.

Last Saturday, we woke up early, had a bowl of oatmeal with craisins and drove to Provo. As we approached Y Mountain, I shuddered. That Y looked pretty high up, like halfway up the mountain. In my head, I thought, "What in the high heavens am I doing? This is gonna suck."

Jack couldn't sit still, he was so excited, for what I am not sure. We parked the car, put on our sweatshirts and headed to the first switchback. Jack thought he was going to run the whole way up, but by the first switchback, he told me he needed a break. Too bad there are 10 steep switchbacks. And during those switchbacks, the BYU Homecoming Parade was on 9th East below and we hiked to the marching band and their repeated BYU fight song, "Rise and Shout". "Rah rah rah rah rah GOOOOO COUGARS!" It seemed so appropriate seeing as we were hiking the Y.

After lots of breaks and whining, we did it. And we felt amazing. When the Y was in sight, Jack hugged my leg and said, "We did it Mom!!!" Like we had done something momentous like beat cancer. But for a little boy and his mom, it did feel like we had done something momentous. It was interesting to do a big hike with him. It was just us two and we had a great time. We talked and encouraged each other. We noticed the nature around us together. And we got to the top together. The whole experience felt very symbolic of all sorts of things. Very selfishly, I feel lucky that it was just us two. We will be doing this more often.

WOW, I can't believe that you hiked the Y! I would have tried to get someone else to take my son on that hike...a neighbor, a stranger, family...anyone but me;)

Adorable pic of you and your little guy!! That really is great that he made it. I remember going many years ago, my one and only time. Now my 6-year old is bugging me to go, but I told her we'd wait for spring. Maybe she'll forget, right???

He'll remember that. He will, so good on you for hauling your preggo self up that hill.

Wish I'd come. In fact, maybe next week I'll do it. Fat kid and all.

Not only do I think it is great that you two hiked up there, but I think it is great that you made that happen for your little guy. I can't tell you how many times I have said "soon" or "another time.." and not ever made those times happen, that's terrible feeling! And by the way, you both are adorable! Congrats again!

That is so great. I've never hiked the "Y", but you are giving me inspiration. So maybe when the snow goes away in May. :-)

I love this picture, what an amazing memory. The fact that you did this while preggo, is all the more impressive.

What a great idea. You've got a nature/hiker lover in your family. What a beautiful view. Seeing as it is snowing today ~ I am glad you made it up there.
