Bookmarked VI

The latest and greatest from my bookmark files
and then a personal message from me to you.

Raise your hand if you are bummed that Cafe Johnsonia has stopped blogging. (Both hands raised). While I am sad, I applaud her analysis of what is best for her and her family. I told her that if she ever wants a place to post recipes on occasion, Rookie Cookie welcomes her wholeheartedly.

Erica posted a cookie recipe that will help you use up your kid's Halloween candy. Such a brilliant idea. Click here for the recipe.

A blog worth your time: Handmade Gone Wrong. Ever seen something on Etsy that makes you wonder "who buys this crap?". This blog is a compilation of all that goodness.

Sweet Pea posted a great slow cooker recipe. Most slow cooker recipe can be kind of dull and run-of-the-mill. But she developed a recipe for moo shu pork. And it looks delightful. It is full of vegetables and flavorful Asian ingredients. I can imagine it would make my house smell delicious.

Are you or your kids big "Yo Gabba Gabba" fans? Good, we are too. The production crew has a blog and it gives you a taste of how they keep the creative juices flowing throughout filming. Never a dull day on the YGG set. They just wrapped up Season 3. Hopefully there will be a Season 4. Ruth? Any input on that?

Speaking of "Yo Gabba", I could watch this video of Chromeo singing "Nice N Clean" over and over again. Great music, funny guys and good message, especially during flu life right now. I say flu life because it seems inevitable that we are all going to get it at some point.

Recently, I have had a few readers question me and who I am because I am a Latter Day Saint, more commonly known as a Mormon. They think I am mislead and they "feel bad for me". To react to assumptions and narrow-minded comments, I feel I must let you know where I stand when you say such things to me and about me. Yes, I am a Mormon. I was raised in the Mormon church, as was my husband. I believe in Jesus Christ and his sacrifice. I believe that Joseph Smith was a modern-day prophet and translated the Book of Mormon. I believe in modern-day prophets we have today, including President Thomas S. Monson. I believe in the Holy Bible and I read it along with and as an accompaniment to the Book of Mormon. I believe that marriage should only be between a man and a woman. I believe that families can only be together forever through temple marriage.

That is where I stand. I respect you and your beliefs, I ask you to do the same for me. If you have a problem with who I am, how I choose to live my life and raise my children, I cordially invite you to stop reading my blog. And hey, just because I am LDS doesn't mean my food tastes bad.

That sentence is really where it's at with some of your readers'. C'mon--you like her recipes "even though" Whit is Mormon? Are you that socially backward? That's like me saying, "Oh I love this one home decor blog, but it's written by a lesbian . . ." I'm straight. Means I'm not a lesbian; we have differences in preference. But it should have nothing to do with the way I feel about her design blog so long as she's not using that blog to ram any specific ideology down readers' throats. Similarly, yes, Whitney is a Mormon-- it's her background and influences her in all the ways possible, but she does not now, nor never has, used this blog to preach about her beliefs and try to convert everyone to her persuasion.

It is a FOOD blog, you dolts. She writes about food. And because what she cooks is for her family, she includes anecdotes about them. And because she's not ashamed if it, she mentions her family's religion from time to time.

A FOOD blog. Her religion has nothing to do with how her gingerbread and roasted chicken taste. Nothing. Not even after she's asked the Lord to bless it.

If this were a blog all about why being a Mormon is so hot, some of the emails and comments this blog gets would be justified. But it's about what to eat, and it doesn't even have one of those hideous "I belive" buttons picturing the Salt Lake Temple or the Angel Moroni.

(Incidentally, the "I belive" buttons--the design of which shouldn't ever be dispayed, it's so horrendous--make me think more of Santa Claus than Christ or the LDS church.)

Pardon all typos and spelling problems, please; leaving z comment this size on a phone is no piece of cake.

You'd think if I'm writing out "believe" twice I could spell it right at least once.

Handmade Gone Wrong is awesome. I have often showed Bret things sold on Etsy that are in my mind crap and usually get the exclamation "What the hell??!" from my non crafty lips. (please tell me you've seen the $100knitted birthing doll that gives you a lay away option...)

I enjoy YGG's blog and love that they do themed days at work. It'd be so fun to work there.

Did I see you in a video dancing with a wig on or was it just my imagination? I think it was the Salteens...

Been a fan of yours for awhile and now even more so. I love how you just laid it all out. Take it or leave it. I'm with you- LDS and all- but don't assume things about me or my religion from craft posts. I guess I take the same approach- my crafts taste good even if I'm LDS. ha! :)

I just have to comment about your "message to the reader". Through blogs I have "met" quite a few Mormons and have found that there are many reasons for me to be a bit jealous of that lifestyle. I found them to be forgiving, faithful, prideful of family, talented, smart, and so many more positive things. Rarely has any of them been negative people. So to those that don't understand they should do as you suggested and just not read your blog. Personally, I say good for you to stand up for what you believe.

Sorry if this became a bit of a rant or I used too many " " marks. :-)

I can't believe you get people telling you they feel sorry for you and such. We don't agree on things, but we still manage to be friends. I would never message someone I didn't agree with. That is part of the beauty of being an American, you have the freedom to say what you want, and I have the freedom to not listen. Seriously people.

I can't help but comment because I have had similar comments to my face. "I just don't understand, you guys seem like good people, but you're mormon." my list could go on forever.

I would just like to say, what the ____???... Seriously? People question you on your beliefs and or recipes because your a LDS???

I love your response to them, however you owe noone an explanation as to "who you are".

I love your blog and your recipes...hence why I popped on here at 3:30 in the afternoon...looking for dinner inspiration.

Oh, "Homemade Gone Wrong" is awesome! Thanks for sharing, as always. I enjoy your bookmarks oh so much!

And I loved your example of how to stand up to those with negative comments in a classy, dignified, and polite way. And thank you for sharing your testimony. :) It's always nice to read those on Mormon blogs once in a while.

Well said girl!

Could you clarify something for me? When you say you believe marriage should only be between a man and a woman, is that ONE man and ONE woman? Or is that ONE man and SEVERAL women.

Thanks in advance for the clarification.

It seems to me that NOBODY could follow after Rabid's awesome comment, but whatev.

Don't you love it when people out themselves as Mormon-haters? Usually judging someone by their religion like that is accompanied by all sorts of other personality lousiness, so I've always been secretly grateful for the people who get it out of the way like that so I don't have to bother finding out about them the hard way.

How's that for stirring the pot?

Hearts and things like that.

i love that you laid it out there. it's one thing to have an opinion but to comment on someones blog with hate and animosity... i say get a life you ignorant fool.

I made a vow not to add anything else to my Google Reader, but I just had to make room for Handmade Gone Wrong (don't worry, I didn't delete the Rookie Cookie. Or since it's October, how about Spooky Cookie? Okay, that rhymed in my head but not when I say it out loud...)

I was searching for the controversial comment, but gave up after a couple of clicks. Who are these people that have so much time to try and start drama in others' lives?

It makes me sad that people actually harass you about your beliefs while you are blogging.
Even if I disagreed with someone I would never send them a message to tell them I felt sorry for them or that they are wrong.

I think your food is fantastic, and have pretty learned to cook for my husband thanks to your blog.
Keep it up :)

Hey, I'm sorry Whitney! Why people feel the need I have no idea.....

I'm bummed about Lindsey too and wish her all the best. Lucky, you have gotten to meet and spend time with her and am certain you will again! Give her my best. :)

Hey Rookie-- I am a friend of Rabidrunner. I have never posted before because I just use your recipes. Thanks for all the yummy ideas. Keep it up I love it.

For the few absolutely lame-o readers I have that think it's their job to disapprove of me, I have so many others that are kind and respectful. Thank you for your comments.

Whitney, as a Jewish woman, I have faced my fair share of comments by idiots, stereotypes, and stupid questions. The people who should keep their traps shut the most just don't. Cue the eye roll in the face of narrow-minded numnuts.

I'm so glad you didn't take a break! Thanks for all your fabulous recipes. BTW, I loved your parenting experience from a couple weeks ago. So hilarious!

Oh how I do love your food and the wit that come with it. Can I just add that Rabid is hilarious, but then we already knew that. Too funny of a comment.

It's sad to say but I have NO idea. But we are having a live show. It should be coming to a town near everyone next year. This year it will only be in LA, NY and Chicago.

Wouldn't the world be a greater place if we all had the tenacity to stand up for what we believed and respected others right to do the same?

Thanks for great posts. In addition to great recipes, it is always nice to know a little more about the writer. Otherwise, you might as well just buy a cookbook. Keep it up.
