Pomegrante Orange Sorbet

If you are paying attention, you know I didn't do an ice cream last month. Why? Because it would have been pointless. I will give you one guess as to what ice cream was mass-produced in blog world last month? Yes, peppermint. And I am not making eggnog ice cream because the thought of eggnog in any form makes a little bit of barf come up my throat.

I had a bad experience with peppermint last month. You know the lotion from Bath and Body Works called Twisted Peppermint? Well, let me tell you, it is pretty twisted. I wanted to smell festive one day so put Twisted Peppermint all over my body. Holy crap! It was like Twisted Icey Hot! It was terrible. I was freezing cold for an half hour.

I had grand plans to make some peppermint ice cream and post it, but then everyone else did. And I am not one to be like everyone else. So I passed on December's ice cream. I couldn't think of anything creative to do besides peppermint. So on to January. How about some pomegranate orange sorbet? Yeah, that's what I thought.

2 cups water
1 cup sugar
2 cups pomegranate juice (Pom)
1/4 cup lemon juice
Zest from 1 orange

In a medium saucepan, heat water and sugar to boiling over high heat. Boil sugar mixture 5 minutes, reducing it slightly to a syrup. Remove syrup from heat and cool to room temperature.

In bowl, combine syrup and both the pomegranate and lemon juices and orange zest. Cover and refrigerate mixture until cold or overnight.

Pour chilled mixture into ice-cream freezer container and freeze according to manufacturers directions. Transfer sorbet to airtight container and freeze until firm, at least 2 hours or overnight.

Rookie's Notes: As for the orange taste, do what you prefer. If you want a lot, add the zest like it says in the recipe. If you only want a little, add the zest right before churning. The longer the zest sits in the pomegranate base, the more pungent it will be. Mine definitely packed a punch since it sat overnight, but I love the tartness.

Besides just digging into the sorbet, you could definitely pour some soda over it. Sprite or Squirt are delicious.

Hey, Rookie, I have some pomergranates (two) sitting in my fridge. Can I use them instead of the juice? Are they juicible? Does that even make sense?
